Reminder: British Columbia’s Minimum Wage Set to Rise as of September 15, 2016
Employers in British Columbia are reminded that the province’s minimum wage is set to rise from $10.45 per hour to $10.85 per hour as of September 15, 2016. This change is the second step in the Government of British Columbia’s stated intention to raise minimum wage to $11.25 per hour by September 2017.
As of September 15, 2016, all employees in British Columbia must be paid minimum wage according to the following increases:

  • The general minimum wage will be increased from $10.45 per hour to $10.85 per hour;
  • The minimum wage for a liquor server will be increased from $9.20 per hour to $9.60 per hour;
  • The minimum daily wage for a live-in home support worker will be increased from $104.50 to $108.50;
  • The minimum daily wage for a live-in camp leader will be increased from $83.60 to $86.80;
  • The minimum wage for a resident caretaker (for an apartment building containing 9 to 60 residential suites) will be increased from $627.00 per month plus $25.13 for each suite, to $651.00 per month plus $26.09 for each suite; and
  • The minimum wage for a resident caretaker (for an apartment building containing 61 or more residential suites) will be increased from $2,135.71 per month to $2,217.46 per month.

Employers must ensure that they are compliant with these changes to the Employment Standards Act and its associated regulations.
