British Columbia Announces Minimum Wage Increase Effective September 15, 2016

The Government of British Columbia has announced it is raising the minimum wage from $10.45 an hour to $10.85 an hour, effective September 15, 2016.
The last time the minimum wage was increased in British Columbia (September 2015), the Government indicated all future increases would be indexed to inflation, as measured by the Consumer Products Index (CPI).  An increase tied to CPI would amount to approximately $0.20, bringing the minimum wage in British Columbia to $10.65 per hour.  However, the current 2016 increase exceeds this amount by an additional $0.20.
Additionally, the Province announced the following wage increases:

  • Minimum daily wage for a live–in support worker will be increased from $104.50 to $108.50;
  • Minimum daily wage for a live-in camp leader will be increased from $83.60 to $86.80;
  • Minimum wage for a resident caretaker (for an apartment building containing 9 – 60 residential suites) from $627.00 a month plus $25.13 for each suite, to $651.00 a month plus $25.13 for each suite;
  • Minimum wage for a resident caretaker (for an apartment building containing 61 or more residential suites) from $2,135.71 a month to $2,217.46 a month;
  • Minimum wage for a liquor server from $9.20 an hour to $9.60 an hour.

Employers should ensure they are compliant with these changes to the Employment Standards Act and its associated regulations as of September 15, 2016.
