Ontario Government Raises Minimum Wage to $11.40

The government of Ontario has announced that it is raising the minimum wage from $11.25 to $11.40 per hour effective October 1, 2016.  This is Ontario’s tenth minimum wage increase since 2003.
Ontario will also be raising the minimum wage from $10.55 to $10.70 for students under 18 working less than 28 hours per week, from $9.80 to $9.90 for liquor servers, and from $12.40 to $12.55 for homeworkers.
The minimum wage was last increased on October 1, 2015. The current change is the result of the passage of Bill 18, the Stronger Workplaces for a Stronger Economy Act, 2014, which amended the Employment Standards Act, 2000 to require the Minister of Labour to adjust the minimum wage on a yearly basis in order to account for increases in the Consumer Price Index. The newly adjusted wages are to be announced before April 1 of each year, and begin to apply on October 1 of that year.
